Acquisition of Foreign Nationality by an Indian National:
India does not recognize the concept of dual nationality. Any Indian national who obtains a foreign citizenship ceases to be an Indian national from the day of acquisition of the new nationality.
Holding an Indian Passport/ acquiring an Indian Passport/ travelling on Indian Passport (excluding the grace period of 3 months after the acquisition of the foreign nationality) after acquisition of foreign citizenship (i.e. Naturalization certificate) constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act 1967 and attracts penalties.
Case 1: Indian national staying in India acquires a foreign nationality:
- Obtain the passport of the new nationality.
- Surrender the Indian passport, Indian Voter ID, Indian Ration card, and all other relevant Indian nationality documents.
- Apply for visa services on https://indianfrro.gov.in/ within 30 days of acquisition of foreign nationality.
Case 2: Indian national staying abroad acquires foreign citizenship but enters India on an Indian Passport:
- Surrender the Indian passport, Indian Voter ID, Indian Ration card, and all other relevant Indian nationality documents.
- Apply for visa services on https://indianfrro.gov.in/ within 30 days of arrival in India.
